Neighbor has an 801 with Select-o-Speed trans. tractor runs ok but don't move so well. He would like to get it repaired. He was told that if a 5 speed trans could be found it would fit right in . I'm a little sceptical about the fit right in part. How tough to repair Select-o-Speed??

I hope someone can help me. I have an 801 with sos and am unable to find someone who knows how to check or change the transmission fluid. My tractor slowed down today,6th gear was like 3rd. I believe its a transmission fluid problem. Can anyone help?

An SOS trans can be a little intimidating to go through if you've never done it before, however, if you have a repair manual next to you and follow the instructions step by step, I wouldn't be afraid of it if I were you. As far as parts availability is concerned, about all you can get new any more nowadays is gaskets, seals, clutch plates, and a few small parts. However, used parts are plentiful in wrecking yards, so go for it! If you like, let me know what some of your symptoms are and I'll see if I can point you in the right direction. You might not need anything more than band adjustments!

To swap a 5-speed in you will need to replace everything from the flywheel back to the differential housing. This will not be cheap,
especially if you go for the double clutch/live PTO setup.

Tractors with the Select-O-Speed transmission in working condition usually sell for half the price of an equivalent tractor with the 5 speed. That should tell you how fixable it is.
