Freeze plugs in a Ford 860

I had 2 freeze plugs leaking so I thought I'd better change them. They came out easy enough. They were marked 2 1/16. Went to NAPA
and got them. Can't get them started in the block. Did put permatex on them but no luck. Any ideas?
 
Do you have a socket or bushing driver that fits in the freeze plug close to the I.D. of the freeze plug? Getting it started straight is the hardest part of getting it in. You are correct in using some sealer on the plug. Are you on the side of the block, or the tricky one on the end of the block by the battery?
 
I had the same trouble installing new 2 1/16 plugs on a Ford 6000 diesel block. What finally got them in was a BIG hammer and a 3/4 drive extension. Using a socket too large won't let the plug shrink slightly in the center to enter the bore. Mine are a bit deformed in the center now, but in place and don't leak.
 
It's been years since I've installed freeze plugs in a block. But beyond what the others have said, try cleaning the holes up with some Emory cloth or a flapper disk on a drill. There may be some leftover residue from sealer.
 
I replaced the freeze plugs in my 860 last year. Use the biggest socket you have to get them started into the bore. Once started, I used a piece of small flat steel on the top rim of the plug to seat them all the way into the block. The plate steel will also keep you from pushing them too far into the block and they will end up being flush to the block surface.
 


I usually use a 1/2 inch drive with a short extension. Just be glad you have room to swing a hammer and that there are no fenders in the way!
