3600 power steering question

Hello everybody So I screwed up in disassembling the steering control valve and did not mark which hole the 2 check valves were in. Can anybody describe which one of the 4 holes they go back into? Thanks in advance for the help. MHG

Shawn may be correct. I do not know.
The correct way to install them though is
as follows:
Note the extra fitting the yellow pencil
points to. That goes to the top, right as
you are sitting in the seat.
Note the green pencil. In that hole you
install a special plunger horns up. Then
the 2 balls. Then the other special plunger
horns down.
The other holes get an ordinary plunger,
then a spring, then another ordinary
plunger.
One other thing: The second photo below
shows the correct orientation of the center
spool. The groove goes toward the top.

Ultradog, thanks for the pics they really helped. I have a shop manual but do you have any advice on reassembling column, specifically tightening the lock-nut? Thanks MHG

Which manual do you have?
The thing about tightening the nut down
onto the spring washer is to not over
tighten it. That spring washer Must flex up
and down for the hydraulic block to do its
job. The book is not real clear either.
Tighten the nut untill it just begins to
compress the spring then give it another
1/6 turn. That should do it. Then 'stake'
the nut into the slot in the shaft with a
punch as per the photo below.
Did you replace BOTH the upper and lower
seals in the column while you had it apart?
If you did not replace both of them you
will likely be back in there. So do it now
before you put it all back together.
The 3600 is a great small tractor.

Shaun & Ultradog Thanks for the help. I have an I&T manual that makes it sound pretty straight forward but I wanted to check to be sure. Yes I am replacing all o rings and seals. It has been a good tractor, we bought it new in 1976. Hope to get the steering working so we can use it tedding again this hay season. Thanks again MHG

Hello Ultradog, I have read your posts on the control valve and I have some questions. My tractor is a 1963 ford 4140 HD Industrial with drag link assist power steering. I just purchased the tractor and have gone through everything that needed repair except no power steering. I have a new pump 1350 psi and have fixed all the leaks in the lines. The PO rebuilt the power steering cylinder and removed the control valve. The control valve C0NN3A730B has 3 plunger ports only, not 4 as in your photo of a control valve that I have seen. I suspect that the PO of the PO may have assembled the plungers wrong. Do you know the correct assembly of the 3 plunger control valve (4 plungers, 2 springs, 2 horned plungers, 2 balls)? Also, which way does the center valve install? There is a groove on the inside at the bottom (or top depending on orientation). I hope you can help because there is very little info on this. Thank you
