Assuming engine is sleeved, why are piston/sleeve kits available with 3.90 and 4.0 bore? Some places only offer 4 bore. I understand how the added cu inches might be important for NASCAR or other competition but can't imagine it making enough difference in a tractor to make it worth overhead of stocking both.

db, the answer to this type of question is always 'money'. To this point the market has supported offering both the original 3.9" and the 4.0" overbore kits.

I have been told the 4" kits became available when better materials became available to make thinner walled cylinders out of. Maybe, dunno for sure.

I've overhauled a number of these engines. I use the 4" kit. I see no reason not to coax a few more percent out of the engine. Others might disagree.
