Ford 3500 industrial

I have 2 Ford tractors. A 1965 4000 RC and a 1972 3500 industrial. Both are gas. 4000 4 spd w/ hi/lol and 3500 is 4 spd w/ F/R converter. My question is if I were to change out the 3500 transmission and rear end and replace it w/ the 4000 transmission and rear end , will it work ? Plan on using the 3500 for raking and teddering hay. Ground is too rolling for the converter transmission. My grandsons help me out with these jobs and I don't want them or me to be injured due to getting bounced off a runaway tractor. The 3500 has no PTO shaft and I have replaced the clutch, pressure plate, t/o bearing on the 4000. It has hydraulic independent PTO and double hydraulic valve as well.
If it will work how big of a job is that going to be ?

Some random thoughts. Hope it's not too
boting.
The Fords of that era were modular. So you
can do a lot of swapping around on them.
Theoretically it would all swap but there
would be a few glitches.
Remember: the flywheel and clutch ALWAYS
stay with the transmission. Always.
Your new clutch would fit.
You would need to find different wheel
centers to use the 3500 tires on the RC
axles.
The RC (4000) lug pattern is 8 on 8 in. The
3500 is 8 on 6 in.
Putting 38 in tires on a 3500 front end
would make it pretty weird. You'd have
trouble staying in the seat at that angle.
The smaller tires would make the tractor
Very slow due to different gear ratios in
the rear end.
The double hyd valve would Not swap over.
You'd need to find a pto engage handle for
a regular 4000. Also find the linkage for
the differential lock from a regular 4000.
Need to find a clutch pedal from a
2/3/4000. The brake pedals from the 3500
would swap over.
You don't state what type of engines are in
them. The starter ring gears on the
flywheel are different from gas to diesel
but can be swapped.
If both tractors you have are decent
runners, making one Frankentractor out of
them would be a huge hit in value.
You might be able to sell the 3500 TC
tranny. The rear end would be scrap.
Left over steering parts from the RC would
all sell. And if it is a wide front that
would sell. Also, tin and hood from the RC
would sell.
3500 engine in a 4000 chassis would be
rather under powered.
You would be WAY better off using a 2000 or
3000 tranny/rear end. Then it would all be
a direct swap and with the help of a couple
grand sons could easily be done in one day.
Or, sell both the tractors and buy one good
one. Maybe a nice 4000 or 4600 ag model.
Lastly, the RC 4000s did not come out till
1966 - a full year after the introduction
of the rest of that series.
PS,
Welcome to the Ford board.

Thank you gentlemen. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. I feel like I need to clarify a few things about my tractors that I didn't mention. The engines in neither tractor are running. I've had the 4000 for over 25 years and used it for logging. Put a new replacement double hydraulic valve to replace the bad one on the 4000. Needless to say that it's really ragged out. Made the clutch, pressure plate, starter, radiator, and other repairs about 20 years ago. Ran at that point in time. Retired it for a log skidder and it set inside until I didn't have the space for it. Took it to a mechanic and intended for him to get it back to running last spring. Set around there until about a month ago when I saw this ad for the 3500. Owner died unexpectedly while it was in the shop. Was there because it wouldn't run was what I was told. Neighbor picked it up for the widow and it looked and is exceptional so I bought it to fix the 4000. Meanwhile back at the mechanic with the 4000 called me and said that crankcase had water in it sooo now I have 2 Ford's with supposedly bad engines in both.
I assumed that the 4000 was a RC but I wasn't told that. It has 38" rears.
The 3500 has the reversing T/C. The 4000 is an 8spd or 4spd w/ hi/ lo ranges. People here in Kentucky refer to them either way. It also has the hydraulic independent PTO.
None of what I have mentioned doesn't help me out any but perhaps give a little bit more detail about what I have.
Will have to study about the comments and about whether to replace the 3500 engine with a dsl or O/H what I have.

You could get an All Purpose 4000 with
either 30 in. or 38 in. rears.
The 4000 Row Crop only came with 38 in.
rears.
This is a 4000 Row Crop..
You could get them with either wide or
narrow front ends.
Note how you sit much higher, with your
feet on a platform above the transmission.
On an all purpose you sit much lower and
your legs straddle the transmission

If they both sat outside for any length of time, then water in the crankcase may just be from exposure, and not from any inherent problem with the engine. Only way to know for sure is tear them down and send the blocks and heads to a machine shop unless you see some obvious cracks when tearing them down.

Thanks Ultradog. After seeing that picture I can say that mine is not a RC but it's an All Purpose.

Thanks Sean. Yes mine has been outside for a number of years. The 3500 has been outside for about a year from what I was told. Not sure if they covered exhaust or not.

I have another question for you sir. The reason why I wanted to replace the T/C transmission with a regular one is because I was uncertain whether the T/C would freewheel like a MF multi-power switching to low when going downhill. As I stated a lot of the ground is rolling where I harvest hay and surrounded by woods. The rear tires don't have fluid in them so the tractor will slide on the grass. I can remedy that easily though.
Another reason I wanted to change the back half is I need a PTO unless one could add it to the 3500 chassis.

I can't answer your question about freewheeling down hills, but I do know that the torque converter trans in the 3500 never had a PTO option available.

She won't freewheel like a multi power. Ford made a T/C with PTO years after the 3500 but no 3500-s that I know of.

Thanks. May have to do something different than I had planned with the tractor. Its about what I have been looking for as far as the size. Just didnt know it would be so interesting and involved.
