My tractor just had the injector pump rebuilt and the diesel return lines redone. After I got my tractor back, I didn't run the tractor above idle because of the leaking power steering pump. After installing the new PS pump I ran the idle up to bleed the PS system. I noticed a stream of fuel leaking at the back of the motor - I think from the valve cover. And oil flowing out of the oil dip stick tube. From reading older posts I see that the problem of diesel in the oil is most likely from an injector pump leaking. Because I had a small river of fuel leaking from the back of the motor I'm going to start looking for problems in the fuel return lines.
My questions are:
Is it safe to run the tractor with the valve cover off to look for a leak?
If it isn't a fuel line leak, is the injector pump leak a DIY fix? Or, does it need to go to a shop again?
Any other advise on how to find & fix the problem?
