4500 backhoe shuttle linkage

We have a 71 4500 backhoe we use on the farm and it has been a handy and reliable little unit. Today, however, something seems to have happened with the shuttle linkage and it won't go forward. The lever moves the linkage that goes into the top of the trans but it doesn't feel connected any longer, -just slops back and forth. Seems stuck in reverse, though.

My gut feel is that it means the machine will have to be split to fix whatever broke or came loose inside but maybe someone here knows an alternate approach? Don't have a diagram yet to see how the linkage connects internally but I don't see any access plates that would help.

You probably wore out the pin between the bellcrank and the valve spool. If your only problem is the linkage inside the bell housing, you won't need to split her.

There is a vertical shaft through the bell housing. The linkage connects to a bellcrank that is roll pinned to the vertical shaft. The vertical shaft rides on a bearing cup pressed into the bottom of the bellhousing. There's another bellcrank inside the bellhousing roll pinned to the vertical shaft. This bellcrank is pinned to the valve spool with a removable pin secured with a cotter pin. Access is through the bottom of the bell housing (remove cover) or go through the top of the bell housing (remove steering gear). Check the pin through the bottom. If it's broken or missing and if you can't find someone with small hands related to Houdini to replace it, you will have to go through the top.

Great info. we'll check for that pin. Thanks for taking the time.

Don't have a diagram yet to see how the linkage connects internally

This will give you an idea of what you're dealing with.
