Question on Ford 445A font mount hydraulic pump

So I'm reassembling the front of the 445A after replacing the steering hydraulic lines and I notice the little PTO drive shaft that connects the hydraulic pump to the crank v-belt pulley has a threaded 3/8" coarse thread tapped hole in the spline end that attaches to the pump shaft.

I've never seen a set screw on a splined shaft coupling and these threads were clogged with dirt and grease, leading me to believe that there never was a screw in there. But should there be?

There isn't a flat spot on the pump shaft splines but I'm wondering if maybe the factory used a pointed set screw? The splined coupling fits relatively snug but there is some play in it so maybe the set screw takes care of that.

I looked it up on Messick's page but there isn't a set screw shown on the pic or listed.

Any thoughts?

no set screw, engine is bolted down, shaft is bolted to pulley, pump is bolted down, shaft can't go anywhere

be sure to replace that fanbelt, you'll never get an easier chance!

I have a new fanbelt I'm also replacing any rubber part that is in there.

In the intervening years since I've taken this thing apart, I've now lost the bushings that space the PTO drive shaft. Arrgghh!

Does anyone have length to those bushing spacers? I hate to guess.

Lay a straight edge across the pulley and measure from the back of the straight edge to the bottom of the pulley. Add 1/16". You may still be 1/32" shy so round up. If your splines are worn, you're going to have to shim out further to save the input shaft and pump drive. That's the best I can do without doing some work.
