Ford 4000 split

Looks like I will have to split my 1968 Ford 4000 diesel with dual range 8 speed manual transmission. I have a couple of hydraulic fluid leaks at the rear transmission case to center housing gasket, and the pedal shaft gasket. I'll also replace the PTO brake during this time as it's never worked. My question is once I disconnect the brake and clutch pedal rods and remove the bolts-nuts that secure the center housing to the transmission case then will it just slide apart or are there internal connections that require me to slip a tool inside to disconnect to prevent pulling something loose? I've never split a tractor so really don't know what to expect. Just wondering if there are are any non-obvious tricks to splitting it that I need to know. Can I leave the hydraulic top cover in place or does that have to come off too? Thanks in advance for any tips.

The first thing to do is purchase a copy of the factory Ford Service Manual. All your questions will be answered. They are worth every penny.

You won't find a PTO brake on a 4000. Does the PTO shaft disengage as it should, such as if you have a rotary mower hooked up, does the mower stop spinning when you disengage the clutch? The PTO clutch parts are not expensive so this would be a good time to replace them (if necessary) while it is split.

This is not a Select-o-Speed transmission so I've been told my 8 speed manual has the PTO brake in it. Can be viewed through one of the left side covers but not replaced through them. PTO brake being Item #22 on the attached schematic.

Your 4000 does have a pto brake, although no necessary removing the lift top makes it easier the access the pto control valve that youll have to get to to replace the brake, it also gives access to the the main drive and pto shafts the help align the splines when mating the trans back to the rear axle
Theres a oil transfer tube sticking up in the lift top in the right front corner, make sure to work it down out of the lift top in order not to bend it
Make sure to clean the hydraulic pumps suction screen while the tractor is split, its the only time it can be accessed
It would also be a good time to go over the lift top making any adjustments and replacing the piston o-ring

When you get the two halves back together, before you reinstall the pump check the clearance between the pto shaft and pump drive gear and shim accordingly. New Holland still sells the shims in a couple of thicknesses. You will need to bolt it together, measure with a feeler gage then split it again to add the shims if needed.
The I&T FO-31 manual covers the whole thing you are doing adequately.
Also, when you pull the clutch/brake cross shaft for seals take photos or make notes of the locations of the spacers between the pedals. There are differences in thicknesses to them and it can get confusing. Book doesn't show that well.
No aspect of what you are about to do is difficult or complicated.
