engine filling with hyd fluid?

I have a 1962, ford 4000 diesel. and today after bush hogging for an hour or so drove it a little ways to cool down and shut it off for a bit. went to restart it and it would not crank.
I noticed oil dripping from bell housing. so I checked oil with dip stick. oil looked clear and came up the dip stick about 5 or 6 inches
it kind of smelled like hydraulic fluid.
this is my first ever ford diesel, ive owned it about 4 years and its never been a bit of a problem. I run it easy and try to take good care of it.
I got it running by connecting a 1000 amp hour battery with jumper cables and got it back in the barn.
what could be causing this?
what do I do.
this is one tractor I do not have the books for.

Is your hydraulic oil low? Are you sure it isn't diesel fuel diluting the crankcase oil? Diesel fuel draining out of the injection pump, injectors or return line may leave it with air in it. That would explain the hard restart.

the dip stick sure did not smell like diesel fuel. it smelly like hydraulic fluid.
tomorrow I will check all fluid levels.
It has the factory installed Sherman in it if that makes a difference.

well I just had a thought about this
the hydraulic pump on these tractors including the 600's and 800's the early 4000 was modeled after the hydro pump is attachched to the engine block . iu dont have the books but I'm guessing the pump is gear driven off the engine.
is it possible the seals are shot in hydro pump and shooting hydro fluid into engine block

I guess it's possible. Check your hydraulic level and let us know what you find.
