4600 power steering problem

Looking at a 4600 SU diesel for sale. Starts and runs good, but the power steering isn't working. Its leaking a bit from the steering box, owner says it has low pressure from the pump. Tractor is on an auction tomorrow, just got time to look at it. I'm very familiar with the earlier 800 series, but not so much with the newer 3 cylinder diesels. Just looking for advice, not that I'm opening a can of worms. Was looking for a 5000, but this one is close and darn near the same horsepower according to tractor data. Needs rear tires, at about 15%. Any thoughts on value or problems?
Thanks

Those steering boxes are fairly tough, especially on the smaller tractors. If there's a problem, I'd lean towards a pump issue. You could take it off, disassemble and inspect it.

My bad. I didn't realize it was an SU. Your post title said simply 4600 and I ran with that.

The SU front end is not desirable with a front loader. If you were looking for a 5000, you would not be happy with that tractor and front end.

I'm not sure where you live, but your logger handle makes me think you might live in the northwest. I happen to know a friend in Oregon who has a decent 5000 for sale. He goes by dopp creek. Maybe he'll see this and reply.

Bern, Thanks for the response. Im in north central Wisconsin, the logger handle was part of a running joke years ago. I wasn't aware that the SU had a different axle. It looked beefier than the ones on my 800. Ant thoughts on value? Prices seem to be all over the place with the 3 cylinder fords.

4000SU has the same front axle and steering as the 3000 model, which is slightly heavier built than a 800/801
Standard 4000 has a completely different front axle and bolster that looks similar to one on a 5000

Ford Farmer, its at the Integrity Auctions consignment sale right on 51 just south of Merrill. It sold today for 3700.00, I passed on it, holding out for a 5000, I;m thinking. 2 more days of auctions yet. That was the only ford tractor there.

Thanks.
I'm somewhat familiar with that area, but not that auction service.
Those SU's are popular. I'd have passed, too... although that isn't an unreasonable price, even given its issues.
