600 Ford gas tractor sputtering

Ran fine all day yesterday, went to crank it this morning sounded like an ether knock then started sputtering. Got fire at all plugs but acts like it's not getting enough gas now. Will run but it's missing. Plenty of flow at the bowl, any ideas?

Does choking it hurt or help?? If it helps pull the air intake tube off and fire it up. Then put your hand over the intake but try to do so fast enough that you don't kill the engine. Sometime a piece of junk/rust get in the main jet area and can cause that and the hand trick pull it out

pulled the carb off and hit the starter, she backfired. Maybe jumped time? I loosened distributor and it picked up rpm twisted to the right, I can twist it pretty far without a lot of change in sputtering. Revs up good, with the intake hose off the carb it was blowing some gas back out through the intake. I'm befuddled, it was a mowing fool yesterday.

Very uncommon to jump time but the points could be getting bad or slipped. You could also have some valves sticking or they need to be adjusted. As valve wear the tappet gap get narrower so they then need to be adjusted due to not opening or closing as they should. Or maybe a blown head gasket between 2 cylinder so compression form out causes problems

i think it might be the head gasket. No change in performance when I pull either middle plug wire but changes when pulling end plug wires. Might be why I'm getting gas blown back through the carb . Thanks for the tips old.

Simple compression check will tell you if it is the head gasket. BTDT and had to replace a head gasket on a 641 for a guy due to it being blown between #2 and #3 cylinder
