ford 1720

i have a 1991 ford 1720. last week it died on me. was running fine, then lost all power and stalled. would crank and try to fire but nothing. i changed the fuel filter ( was only about a year old) took injection lines off and made sure they werent blocked. i cranked it over without the lines off and the injection pump was pushing fuel. put the lines back on and bled them. still nothing. doesnt even cough. smoke is coming out the exhaust. it also has new injectors and glow plugs this year. what am i missing? pump going bad? what else should i be looking for? thanks for any help i get

Check to make sure the glow plugs are being energized - sounds like they're not coming on. The easiest way to tell is with an amp clamp. Short of that put a voltmeter on the battery and watch the voltage dip as you activate the glow plugs. If the voltage does not dip noticeably, you have an open circuit somewhere.

Check the air box and intake hose for any blockage. Also check the ignition switch on the glow plug side. Had to replace a switch on a 1220. Good Luck.

The voltmeter test would be an easy one. Try it and let us know what you find.

Do the air filter check first, if it was running and died while running- I would suspect pump or timing. Can still push fuel through injector lines unhooked but not under pressure enough to fire. Just had my 1210 pump rebuilt about a year ago. Slow starting cold, after warming up would not run under 1500 rpms'. Then would not restart warm unless pump cooled.

Any time are hear of diesel engines loosing power and then shutting down I question the quality of the fuel. The compact tractor engines seem to be especially susceptible
to having problems with fuel that doesn't provide enough lubrication to the injector pump and injectors. We just had a customer that put gas in his Kubota diesel for the
second time which created the same symptoms you have. We also have had problems with people using heating oil instead of diesel.

Okay. It was running and then stalled so that would rule out the glow plugs; I do know these Shibauras won't start without the glow plugs but yours was already running.
The blocked air inlet is also a very good check but again, your tractor was already running.
That leaves bad fuel or not enough fuel delivery as the culprit.

thank you for all of your input. i really appreciate it. its all better now. i figured it was fuel related and it turns out it was just the fuel filter. and the fact that i am a dumba** and didnt bleed the pump. just the lines. thanks again. there will be more questions as this machine is a work in progress. unless i sell it and get a bigger one
