900 Front End Wobble

My father-in-law has a 900 NF that runs & drives fine in 1st thru 4th gear in the field. But if he goes out on the road in 5th gear he gets a bad wobble in the front end.

Anyone have any recommendations where I should start. Not sure if I should be looking at front wheel bearings or steering issue.

I would start with the steering pitman linkages from the gearbox forward especially checking the play in the power steering valve if it has power steering. Then of course there are the pedestal gears and the sector gears in the steering gearbox.

Do as stevo posted, if you don't find anything loose in those linkages, then jack it up and check the wheel bearings and lastly the pedestal gears. You could get as lucky as a loose wheel bearing.

If you don't have some Toe-in it can cause wobble. Manual tells you how to set it. I had the problem and all the running gear
seemed to be ok---good enough, so I just started adjusting the steering link on one side (longer) a little at a time till it quit.

Thanks for the advice. This wasn't a
problem until this summer. How available
are parts if it is a Ford specific part
versus a bearing? My fear is that his
tractor will be broken or waiting on
parts for way longer than he will like.

Mark, on a NFE?

A narrow front row crop only has steering linkage on one side and there's no adjustment for toe-in available. It is set by the casting of the axle itself.

I'd play with the tire pressure first. Up/down/same between tires/one side higher than the other.

I am unaware of any adjustment possible on the gears inside the front pedestal, does anyone else know? Seems like there should be some shims somewhere and some tolerances specified.

The parts drawings show shims for adjusting the end play on the gear shaft going into the side of the pedestal on both the early style one-piece pedestal and the later two-piece style.

I made a steering stabilizer set-up for a sweeper tractor . Grand Haven [Ford 3000} drove backwards, weird set-up.. Haven't seen another.. But
the steering stabilizer cylinder from a Chevy 4x4 truck worked excellent. Just took a little fenageling to get the geometry right.. A lot
cheaper than replacing all the rusty gears in the nose of that thing..

Roy, give a little hint of where and how you would install it. This should be interesting!
