Finally got my fence row find running, but it still isn't running right. I still haven't narrowed down the year or model though, on the transmission houseing there are 2
numbers ( 821 ) and ( 4825 ). Could someone please help me figure out what these numbers mean and what brand of carburetor it should have on it, it currently has a
zeinith on it. TIA

Like I said it doesn't run good, while its running it constantly bellows black smoke. The zeinith that is on it looks like new. In your opinion is it worth keeping it on or find a M/S for it

I have a 841 with a marvel and a 950 with a zenith. I have swapped them back and forth ( long story) and didn't notice a difference in the way the tractors ran. Black smoke is rich?

821 is the model. It is a model in the 801 series. The middle digit says what options it had. The 2 in the middle digit means that it left the factory with a 4 speed transmission with no PTO and no 3 point hydraulics. Either could have been added later by the dealer or a previous owner, so don't be confused if it has either or both.

4825 is the serial number. That is a 1957 serial number.

Note 821 sometimes had a 5-speed, that was the standard Equipment, see chart below.

Also 1957 is manufacture date, model year would be 1958.

If you had the nomenclature from a repair kit it would have that information. Without it you would need to apply the trial and error method. A straight edge and imagination will get you there.

Thanks for the information, there are so many layers of paint on it I will have to do some chipping to see how many speeds there is. I also forgot to mention that this tractor has a loader and and a backhoe on it.

Check to see if there a 1 in front of the 821, could be a 1821. All the 821 I have come across have been 4 speeds, the 820 I have found to mostly 5 speeds. I have a 821 with the Sherman Reversing Transmission and a 1821 with the Sherman combo both are 1958s, only the shermans were available with the 4 speeds. You will know the 1821 by the full frame and cast iron frontend grill and large non-adjustable front axle.
