4000 Industrial SOS

So the neighbor has one of these sitting out by the barn. I know something is up with the SOS and they can be expensive. But he is wanting to give it to my 14 year old son who likes old Ford tractors and my boy wants to fix it up. Do you guys think its worth it? And also isnt there something you have to do to get it in neutral. He also is going to look at a little jubilee for $500 this weekend hopefully. Looking to have a couple father son projects

If it is a pre 64 (4 cylinder) 4000, then there is a disconnect on the left side. Remove the bent plate held on by a nut and use it to rotate the disconnect towards the front of the tractor. A different transmission can be used to replace the sos. I have a good 5 speed with 2 stage clutch in nebraska for sale if you are interested.

There is a huge difference between the early SOS and the second generation. I wouldn't take an early one but a later one is worth investigating.

I think you have that backwards! The disconnect needs to rotate clockwise to disengage the differential. In other words the little strap needs to be pushed towards the back of the tractor.

Most SOS transmissions of this era are tough units. They can have issues, but most of these won't. If they do have issues, the repairs can range anywhere from a few dollars to several thousand dollars. Some parts are NLS and must generally be sourced from salvage yards.

Thank you guys. I havent been closer than 300 yards to the tractor. I know its blue and grey. Ill keep you in mind if we replace the transmission.
