1985 Ford 4000 tractor

I have a ?. After reading some questions and responses I am looking at a 1985 Ford 4000 with 672 hrs. It states it is a diesel with auto transmission. I am not familiar with auto trans. On tractors. It does not look brand new and has a bucket only with a couple of other implements for extra price. Post hole digger and brush hog. It needs both front tires and a hydraulic hose replaced. Asking price is 7500.00 obo. What can you tell me about what I should pay, the transmission, and possibility of correctness of reported hours.

Hello Margie, and welcome to YT. The 4000 was made with a four cylinder engine from 1962-1964 and then from 1965-1975 they made it in a 3 cylinder version.
Verify with the seller the year (1985 may be a typo). What you call an automatic transmission is a 10 speed Select-O-Speed transmission. You can shift between
gears without depressing a clutch each time so folks confuse them with an automatic. I personally like them and own 4 tractors with the SOS transmission, but
it takes a knowledgeable mechanic and parts can be difficult to obtain; not impossible, but difficult, so don't think you're going to run to the dealer and pick
up what you need.
Depending on the hours and condition, as well as the loader and extra implements, the price seems fair in today's market, but everything has to work
(engine,transmission, PTO, hydraulics, etc).

Another possibility is that it is an industrial model Ford tractor with a torque converter. I agree either it is not a 1985 tractor or is a 1985 but not a 4000.
