FORD 850 PTO lever not disengaging

Hi There.

I bought a ford 850 a year ago. Yesterday marked the first time i hooked up my finish mower. Everything was attached correctly. I engaged the clutch, while in Neutral, the PTO lever on the left hand side, then disengaging the clutch and mowing. Everything operated correctly. When i went to get the tractor put away, i engaged the clutch, pulled off the lever for the PTO, disengaged the clutch back into second gear and the PTO kept running. I put the tractor in neutral, left off the clutch and the PTO kept running.

Any ideas why the PTO level would not disengage the PTO after neutral? The 850 only has PTO when in gear thus begs the question what's keeping it running? There was no noise, grinding etc.

I shut down the tractor. The only time the PTO does not operate is when the foot is down on the clutch.

Thanks for any opinions etc on where to start with this.

Can you feel any movement when you put the PTO lever back and forth? May have come disconnected from the collar inside.

On a single or double clutch your pto will run with the tranny in neutral. If your running a bushog with a single clutch tractor the pto will keep pushing the tractor evn if you have the clutch disengaged. I think you might have a double clutch by your description. It's possible someone installed all the extra parts for a double clutch in that 850 case.

First off, you've got your engaging and disengaging your clutch backwards. When you push the pedal down you are disengaging the clutch. When you release the pedal and it's up the clutch is engaged.

I'm wondering if you're running an over-running clutch on your PTO? If not, the inertia of the mower may have jimmied something up in your PTO clutch mechanism preventing it from releasing properly.
