5610 ford temp. gauge

While cutting hay I noticed the temp. gauge needle closer to the red area than it normally runs. Little while later the needle moved all the way to the red. Went to the shop and loosened radiator cap. Barely a little puff of pressure on the radiator. Coolant almost to the top. No steam. I believe the gauge is wrong. Gauge needle stays all the way to the right (indicating very hot) even when engine is completely cold. Removed the wire from the sending unit, no change. Is there some checking to determine the cause of the gauge not registering properly or could it be something besides the gauge.

Had a extra voltage regulator in the shop. Put it on and the temp. gauge needle moved back almost to the left side (cold side). I had been running it to fill up the new oil filter. Hope that fixed the temp gauge. Will know more tomorrow.

I don't know what was happening. Bought the tractor in Sept. 1981. Original alternator. Remember reading a post with similar problem on a different model Ford tractor. I think it was Bern who replied that he would suspect the voltage regulator. I think I am remembering everything correctly. Please forgive me if I am not 100% correct. However raking hay for a couple of days, the temperature gauge was indicating normal temperature.
