Came across one locally. I have the gas version, is the diesel decent or a problem? I'd appreciate better gallons per hour economy, but don't know much about the early Ford diesels.

Some of the early ones had crankshaft breakage problems. I'm not sure when they added a balancer, but ones with the balancer have a better reputation.

There are some interesting posts in the archives in this forum. We used to have a 4 cyl. diesel, an early 60's 2000 light
industrial. Decent tractor, but was time to upgrade. I think the 3 cylinder general purpose thousand series are quite a bit
ahead of these.

My pal Kenny has an 841D with Sherman
combo.
I have used it a few times for plowing and
discing and once for half a day on my brush
mower. It is a sweet little tractor.
I would not trade it for my 3000D though.
I agree with Billy NY and think the 3
bangers are superior machines.

I have had a 971 since around 2001. I didn't use it a lot until maybe five years ago but the only problem was the injection pump. The pain was prolonged because I sent it out for repair to an advertiser here and it came back no better. Finally I took it to a local shop and they did a complete rebuild and since then it has started and run great. I put around 70 hours on it a year.
