6 cyl Ford Compression

Hi:

I have just acquired a New Holland 1400 with a 6 cylinder Ford diesel motor. Unit runs rough and after doing some tracing I believe the problem is compression. There is good fuel to each injector.

I would take the injectors off to test compression, but have never experienced this before. So, before I do, I am looking for pointers. What should I be aware of and what procedure should I follow.

Do you know what engine it is exactly? I looked at a sketch of the engine in the NH parts catalog, but it's not much help. Can you post some
pics of the engine?

and it does match the one I have. I will see if I can get a better picture later today.
 
That was the same image I found, which wasn't much help at the time. That said, the image does look like the engine that warbaby posted. I
have no personal experience with those engines, however it does look somewhat similar to a Ford 6000 diesel engine in some ways.

If it really is like a 6000, doing a compression test on that engine will be a PITA. The pushrods have to be removed and reinstalled every
time you remove an injector and install the compression test adapter.

Low compression usually doesn't make an engine run rough unless a cylinder is completely dead. What does your blowby look like? Do you feel
any pulsing out the bottom of the blowby tube?
 
The NH 1400 ran the Ford Dorset Industrial, model 2715E (380 c.i.) I just sold mine a few months ago. They are a newer design than the 6000's 242, but still lack the cross flow heads of the 3, 4, and 6 cylinder tractor engines.
I'm no help on doing a compression test, but I agree that the problem is likely elsewhere, unless one cylinder is completely dead.
Has the oil in the injection pump been changed? Maybe a sticking plunger or two...

warbaby: yes that is what the engine looks like, except this one is dirtier and yellow (Grin).

I lack service experience with diesels, much better with gas motors.

I did crack each line to verify diesel to each injector and flow is very similar to each. Not a perfect test but it does sort of imply fuel to each injector.

My hunch is problem with cylinder, but I could be wrong. Sticky valve maybe?
