Hi gang. Just popped in to ask the question as in the title: How to remove the hex drive in a 1957 ford 650 distributor. Mine seems to be stuck in and I don't want to damage it by doing something I shouldn't be doing. Is there a set screw or something holding it in?

Thanks.

I have a new distributor and hex rod for my 651 sitting in front of me. The rod has a small keeper ring on the end of it. That is probably up inside the end of your distributor. You may try putting the hex rod in a vice and pull on the distributor. It should come out.

Ok, thanks. The distributor is back in the tractor for now but when I remove it again to replace it I will try that.

Update.

I pulled the drive shaft out of the dist. with a pair of vice grips and a hammer. This is what it looks like:

I think I'm going to try to find a piece of 1/4" hex and make a new one. (An allen wrench!) There doesn't seem to be anything that's supposed to hold it in place. If I put it back in the dist. it just falls out.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Looks like the end on the right has worn round. Is that the end that was in the distributor? If so, the distributor shaft could be badly worn. If that end was in the oil pump, the oil pump shaft could be badly worn inside.

Since the drive gear is on the distributor end, I am guessing that the oil pump is possibly putting too much load on the shaft. Maybe lack of oil changes causing oil thickening. Running way to heavy an oil possibly during extremely cold weather. Just guessing.

I was wondering that too. I have been using 15/40 diesel oil and getting really good pressure.
