3000 ford thermostat temp which one?

I am going to replace the thermostat in my 3000 when I flush it out. The I & T shop manual says use a 188 degree thermostat with 7psi radiator cap. The book also says I can go with a 160,168, or 178 degree thermostat but 188 is recommended. YT sells a 168 and 172 thermostat with a 13psi radiator cap. What thermostat and radiator cap should I use? I live in MS, it is very hot and humid here, yesterday the heat index was 102.

I just did all that to one of my
3000s. I went with the 172 and a 7lb
cap. Don't remember where I got 7lb
cap but I think NAPA. I replaced the
thermostat housing also. Mine was
pretty corroded. They are cheap. I
also replace both radiator hoses and
put a new belt on. I did all that to
my other 3000 2 years ago. None of it
is very expensive and since you have
all the coolant out now is the time
and you won't have to worry about it
or have problems for a long time.

Hotter is always better regardless of where you live. A 188 t-stat is open just as far as a 160 t-stat at 210 degrees, which is about the
temp that I even start to take notice. 230 or even 240 will not hurt these engines.

Replaced my Thermo. with one from NAPA, about 2yrs ago. About as cheap as you can get, and no shipping to pay!!

188 deg......with a 7lbs rad. cap........temp gauge stays at about 200 deg working temp.

"I guess I was thinking the cooler thermostat would make it run cooler. Thanks"
You are right. The sooner it starts to open the cooler it will run.

All true. The problem is, if it runs too cool, especially if you run it for
short periods or don't work it hard enough to get it good and hot,
it doesn't get hot enough to evaporate moisture out of the oil/block.
As long as it doesn't over heat, it has been my experience that it
is better to run the higher temp thermostats.
And I've never had a properly working thermostat of any temp
cause an overheating issue. Just my two cents!
