Is it possible to know which clutch you
have without separating the tractor??

11 inch single, 12-in dual, or 13-in singl
Thank you!

If high range is up on the two speed shift, it is a two stage clutch. High down; it is single stage, I don't remember a way of determining the size of the single stage, without a split. Try posting in the Fordson Forum, Major Man might know of a way.

11 in was standard, dual clutch, Live Drive, as Skipper says, High is up on the High/Low shifter. 13 in had a heavy duty thrust bearing with a grease stuffer cap on the right hand side near the belt pulley plate.

There was also a heavy duty 11 in standard clutch which had a thicker clutch disc and spacers between the fly wheel and the standard pressure plate. No external indication on this one, you have to split to see the spacers but this type is not that common.

Thank you Majorman for your reply!

Parts guy said,( at Messicks ), 12 dual stage
comes up on his parts list for my fsm.
A 12 dual is avail for $$$$$

A heavier duty 11 is available with a thicker friction plate/lining. The mechanic who worked on it recently said he may have put the thicker lining in and that,( in my opinion anyway) that may have been the wrong lining. Now I get gear clash no matter what I do.
Thank you once again for your help!
I will go out and look at my tractor to see if that external grease cap is on the tractor.

It will not be a dual clutch unless High is the top position on the High/Low selector as it is a totally different gearbox in the Live drive tractor.

Another possibility that would give poor gear changing would be a seized clutch pilot bearing.

You would not be able to get it in gear at all if a thicker drive plate had been used. I have also come across hard gear selection when the pulley drive bevel gear in the gearbox comes loose. You can see and tighten this through the pulley plate on the r/h side

Just a few ideas.

Thanks again for your comeback and information on the Ford super major.

I shifted in and out of high and low range this morning and found that the high range is down and of course the low range is up. I also found that I could shift from neutral to first with very little clash if the RPMs were down and the tractor is sitting perfectly still that is the best I can do there is a little clash but not like Sunday where I made my wrist pretty sore.

I have a considerable job to do in my backyard so I am going to avoid splitting the tractor for now perhaps the machine just needs to be worked some to loosen things up. It has had very little TLC, but now is getting her due.
One other thing I noticed that the high low shifter is extraordinarily difficult to move up and down perhaps a function of very little use / Grease

It would probably help considerably if the differential or rear end would receive an adequate amount of oil right now the level is way down.

I did discover a flat shifter driver's side about shin high..... Am I correct in assuming that this is the PTO engagement lever?
It's connection is to the underside of the transmission /gearbox area.

Once again I am super appreciative of your expertise with these tractors.

Yes, that is the PTO and it will have to be in gear before the hydraulics will work. As it is not a Live clutch, the hydraulics and PTO will stop working when you put the clutch down. If you intend to do any brush hogging, make sure you have an over run clutch on the PTO drive shaft or things will get interesting when you try to stop.

How much free play have you got on the clutch pedal? It should be about 1 inch at the pedal, you can feel the difference by pushing the pedal down with your hand. Remember you are actually shifting the gears, there is no form of synchromesh.

You may also need to check the oil in the gearbox, the level marks are on the filler near the clutch. Oil in the gearbox and rear axle could either be 90W gear oil or a multi-grade like 20/50W.

There are no grease points on the High/Low, it is splash lubricated by oil from the gearbox.

Less than 1 Freeplay, I did that purposely to see if I could avoid clashing, worked well today! Did some digging, was awesome!!
I will, tomorrow, top off gearbox w/20/50 engine oil and get some greasing in too

Starting to have fun

Thank you!!
