Ford 1710 knocking

I was contacted to buy a 1983 1710 that is knocking real bad and has half compression on one cylinder. The ford dealer says it is not repairable so he wants to sell it to me. No pics of it yet but i guess it's in nice condition. Are parts still available for this Shibaura. The guy will send me pics when he gets it back from the dealer.

What would you do in my shoes?

To my knowledge, you can get parts for those shibaura engines, there is another 1710 for sale to be parted out in my area. I am not sure if the dealer has a service dept or not, but if the dealer says it cannot be fixed, you are looking at something major broken internally that cannot be easily rebuilt for use. It definitely has blown gaskets, and probably a broken piston shaft or thrown push rod. What this means is that the cost of repair is greater than the acceptable profit margin the dealer would make from the sale if it were fixed. I.E. it would cost more to sell it fixed than to cut a loss and get rid of it.

Unless rebuilding tractors is a hobby that you can dedicate an unlimited amount of hours to and throw funds at, you might carefully consider your options before purchasing a broken tractor.

Is it a regular 1710, or a 1710 offset? If it is an offset it would be worth more, even for just parting out the parts that are unique to the offset model.

It's an 1983 Sean, before the offsets came out

Go to the website for Weaver's in Pennsylvania. They are about the only one who carries the Shibaura parts. I'm rebuilding the 1500. Parts are pricy but still better than the dealer and the dealers don't really carry much for them. You can call them if you want something specific. The overhaul kit for the 2 cylinder 1500 with pistons, etc. is about 790 bux. Add more for a 3 cylinder. I'd sure be worried about the crankshaft and if there is any damage to the block. If they have it tore down then you can look but I sure wouldn't give more than a couple hundred salvage price to take it off their hands and figure it would cost another 2 or 3 grand to fix.

I am in middle Georgia, and there was a 1710 for sale listed in Griffin, Georgia for cheap. Honestly, besides some parts of the chassis, the only part worth salvage was the Shibaura engine, and that looked good. I vaguely remember seeing it listed on fast line as well.
