1920 tranny

Working on a Ford model 1920 4x4 with 12 speed trans... This tractor has 4 range speeds located on the left fender and 3 speeds located on the left side of the steering column. The problem is in the 3 speed column shifter. It has the 1st, second, and reverse gears working as they should. When the third gear position is selected , it is actually the first gear that is driving the tractor. I'd like to know how this is posable. Does the 1st gear and 3rd gear use the same sliding gear for engagement? If so, could the problem be a bent fork that slides the gear? There is a plate on top of the trans. that, if removed, would likely, let me see the inner workings. At the front of this plate there are bolts that need removing that are in front of the steering column. Does the steering column need to be removed to get the top cover plate off? thanks for any help, gregjo1948
