Ford 860 breaking distributor rotors

My 860 has been running fine. I put in barn about a month ago and it was fine. I tried to crank it 2 weeks ago and it would not fire up. I found rotor broke in pieces. I ordered new Dist. cap.,dust cap, and and ignition kit with rotor from Yesterday Tractor. Put new parts in and same thing. I have never heard of this before. I had a 8N for years and never had this problem.
Any ideas?

Crank the engine in neutral with distributor cap off. If it is something to do with the rotor shaft, it should be visible. If that is rotating smooth without wobble, you can probably eliminate that.

Do you have both dust cover and dust cover seal (O ring) on your distributor?

Do you have the little clip on the top of shaft where the rotor fits? If so is your rotor tight on the shaft?

Had a jubilee doing that. had to change to a different vendor rotor, and reinstall the missing dust cover. I was able to grind off the bottom, a bit, on the bad brand of rotors as a temporary solution.

Yes I do have dust cap with gasket, new dist. cap, and new ignition with rotor and clip on shaft.. Yesterday tractor parts. I waited to answer you until I checked rotor shaft. With dust cap on and turning engine over I could not see any wobble of shaft, but with dust cap off and points closed I could open points about .025 in. by moving shaft. I sure this is my problem unless you think this is OK. If it is dist. should I rebuild or buy new one.
Thank you.
I check my computer every 4 hours if I can.
Note: new rotor had some play on shaft.

Thanks. rotor somewhat loose. I had clip. See reply to Dean. Rotor has about .025 in. play at level of points.

Not sure how loose "somewhat" is on your rotor, but think it should be really snug on the shaft with the clip in place.
