63 Ford 4000 hi range only

My son bought a 63 ford 4000 loader backhoe and it is high range. The handle to move it in and out of the ranges just flops back and forth with no resistance. What is involved to get to the internals? is
splitting the tractor at the engine/transmission or is a further back split required or are there external access points. Thank you

If it is a '63 and it has a low and high range, then it must have the Sherman combo auxiliary transmission. That sits inside the bell housing where the original input shaft for the main transmission used to be, as the auxiliary trans replaces the input shaft. So yes, splitting the tractor between the engine and transmission is required to work on the auxiliary trans.

If it has been that way since you've had it, do you know for sure that it's got the high and low ranges? It could be the reverser auxiliary trans also, which was more popular on the loader/backhoe tractors. in either case a split looks to be in your future.

Are you sure it is a 63 tractor? On them unless it is a 4 speed with axillary transnission there is no high-low range. Get up to the 65 with 3 cylinder engine then they do have a low and high range in the 8 speed transmission.

I will take a photo of the side of the tractor to verify what transmission/auxiliary the tractor has. thank you

Look for socket head cap screw attaching handle to transmission selector. If lucky, it may simply be loose.
