Select-O-Speed could!

The saying goes something like: "You can't outrun a swarm of angry bumblebees on your old John Deere"

I loved mowing native grass with Grandpa's 871 SOS. If I stirred up a nest of bumblebees (which wasn't a rare happening), I'd raise the cutter bar and put the SOS in 10th ratio. It never let me down once! It'd outrun the ornery critters every time. I never got stung while mowing with the 871 SOS.

I think a good share of Select-0-Speed equipped tractors were faster than the average, provided they had decent sized tires. Grandpa's 871 had 14.9 - 28s on it.

My '73 4000 has 13.6x38's on it and it feels faster in each gear than the label on the dash claims. That could just be a perception issue on my part though, as I've never actually clocked it.

Yesterday I pushed into tall grass at the back door to my shop while mowing the lawn. I went in enough to actually mow two feet and then backed out. Two hours later I happened to look out back and saw a lot of bees coming and going from a hole where I had mowed. I don't know why they didn't come after me.
