1958 Ford 1841 Timing

I have a old Ford tractor and I am new to the old Ford tractor community. I have a 172 cu in diesel and it was missing the injection pump, lines, filter housing, throttle linkage, exhaust and intake housing. I checked the engine out and it seemed ok. I got a manual and found a pump and lines, bought a new spin on water separator filter and housing (10 micron). I have performed the timing procedure and will attach pictures. My timing gear wasnt horizontal like the picture so I took the hex gear out for inspection and to see what the best position was without it so I could see the gears mesh. I reinstalled the hex and the gear in the observed best position with number one at TDC and 18 degrees lined up. The big radius is indexed like the manual says and I think I found the timing mark moved it 1/8th to the right of the stationary line and placed the pump in. Sound correct so far?

Ford changed the timing to 23 degrees on
the flywheel ages ago. Set that, line up
both lines in the pump window and drop
it in. If the drive is off it won't drop
in.

Everything dropped right in at 18 degrees nothing seemed off, Engine is original unit from 1958. What would make it run at 18 vs 23? the 18 degree line on my flywheel is longer than the rest of the lines. Does the drive gear look okay?

It will run at either setting. I can't
remember the reason Ford changed it.
Smoke, power, better starting? Seems
like there was something changed about
the pump also? The pump body only moves
about 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch between the
two settings. Your drive looks to be
about the same position as mine is. Let
us know how she runs.

Bled the lines, and once I got fuel it popped off. Let it run for awhile. I have a few other things to button up but I took a gamble on the tractor not knowing anything about it. It does smoke whitish smoke. I ran it awhile and shut it down. I have started it great the last few times. It hits off like it should no ether or excessive cranking. Might have an injector issue but runs good so far.
