Went to replace water pump and there's not enough space between one of the heads and housing to
get a wrench or socket on bolt. Anyone ran into this? New pump has relief ground in housing
for bolt heads. Before I remove radiator and use 4.5grinder on housing does anyone have better
suggestions.

Be a good time to drag out a thin wall socket. All the better brands used to make them. Don't know if they still do. You might try the pawn shops.

I've run into this on manifold studs/bolts, and believe it or not, spark plugs. Have a collection of my own "thin wall" sockets. Made from cheap regular sockets and a bench grinder

Thin wall was my first thought. Of those in my box,3/8 drive 1/2 Matco has the thinest wall of Proto and Craftsman. When I search for thin wall sockets all I see are impact. I haven't tried a feeler guage but I don't think it's more than .050 so I figure grinding one that thin wouldn't be strong enough to resist cracking.

Had the same problem on a spark plug socket on a car. Sockets are 2-4 dollars at Lowe's or Home depot. I bought two and ground them down on a bench grinder. If you put the socket in an electric drill and spin it as you grind it you will get a more even result. Then check with a set of calipers. .

What size wrench? They make what I call sheet metal wrenches / sockets. I had a few at work they gave me. Not heavy duty at all but came in handy occasionally. They looked like the socket end of a chain saw plug wrench with a slide bar to turn it.

They had to use something to put it in with. Lol

I have. I believe the bolt is on the right side of the pump? I use my Dremel tool and cut a slot in the head for a screwdriver socket. When I put the new pump on. I use an allen head socket screw instead of a hex bolt.

M-man I have a set of those for tub and shower facuets,6 points. Now if I can find them to see if a 1/2 is included.
