Hello

I need to order new spindles for my steering on a 1974 Ford 4000. But I can not find the right number in any parts list. It seems like my 4000 has a power steering from a 4100.

The left spindle has a number in the casting. I think it reeds:
D4NN3107

The total steering assembly is from a 4100 power steering. In this assembly the spindle has a different part number. Not the same as my current part.
C7NN3106C

Are these spindles the same part? I can not find any references to the first number on any parts list on the web. Have they changed the numbers over time.

Thanks for all help.

Sounds like you have a 4000SU.
If your front axle looks like the one in
the photo that's what you have and you want
to order a spindle for a 3000.

Forgot the photo.

The front axle is not from a 3000.
All numbers on the tractor indicates it is a 4000 all purpose agricultural from 1974.

The front axle look like this.

A casting number is seldom the same as the part number.

If you look at your parts list again, I bet you see two rows for part #50. One is for the orchard chassies (4340), the other for your Agricultural, all purpose 4000 (also known as 4100):

The correct part number for your left spindle is C5NN3106N:

Right spindle is C5NN3105T:

Thanks Hacke.

So the 4000 and the 4100 is actually the same tractor. That help me a lot. I have seen these spindles in stock here in Sweden:)

4000 is the model, the base of the tractor (engine, transmission and rear axle). The final variant of tractor was defined by the so called chassies type, or derivative equipment. An Agricultural All Purpose type is a 4000 with chassies type 10, and that makes it the derivative model 4100. If the chassies types where three digit (a zero added at the end) things would have been clearer. The Agricultural All Purpose is by far the most common 4000 derivative, so for most people "4000" is enough. 4100 is common in parts lists and manuals.

To make things more exciting, Ford decided to name another model 4100 in the 600-series, that came after 1975. The 1000-series' 4000 became 4600, but model 3055 became 4100. That can cause some misunderstandings.

For the 1965-1975 thousand series, 4000 is the series and the ag chassis model within the 4000 series is commonly referred to as a 4000 model, but it was actually referred to in the parts drawings as the 4100 model. Anything in the parts drawings that refers to the 4000 is referring to the entire series, unless it says "except 4110" or "except 4140" or "except" some other specific model. If it specifically refers to the 4100 then it is only specific to that model.

There was a later tractor made during the 1975-1981 run of the x600 series that was also called a 4100, but it was a completely different tractor, It was basically a 4600 SU with a smaller displacement engine.
