Ford 800 (860) PTO will not engage - over speed?

Hello everyone, I have a Ford 860 that I cannot get the PTO engaged while running. With the engine at the lowest idle possible and clutch pushed in, when I try to engage the PTO it's grinding.

Would this be a clutch adjustment? Any suggestions/help is greatly appreciated.

Pin in rear hole of clevis ??? Pedal height with in rear hole correct, 9 1/2 will work. If not proably getting clutch time.

As noted above, make sure your clutch pedal actuator pin is in the right hole. Clutch pedal should stand up about 45 deg.

If that is the case, probable that the friction disk for the PTO is frozen. Happens just like the friction disk for the trans, but this case it's for the PTO drive.

Unsticking it is not fun. Because, now you have a direct drive from the engine, all the way back to PTO drive. You can try putting an implement on the PTO, engage the PTO lever, and crank start the engine with the clutch all the way down. Just the cranking may break it loose. If that doesn't work, and you have the clutch in, trans in N, engine started, try revving and idling the engine to break the friction loose.

If that doesn't work, you are in trouble. Any kind of torque applied to the stuck PTO that doesn't have a break-away can destroy the PTO drive inside the trans, or the primary shaft, or the pressure or friction plate, or the crankshaft. You could TRY making a breaker bar with a spline hub on the PTO, then with the engine OFF and the key OUT, and the battery disconnected, push in the clutch and have someone rock the breaker bar attached to the PTO. WARNING! Do NOT crank the engine with breaker bar on PTO!

If none of that works, prepare to split the tractor, and fix it right. I've heard that you may be able to access the friction disks on some tractors from the starter hole after the starter is removed, but I cannot confirm that is the case on the 860. Something to check I guess.
