Steering works fine but I often find the reservoir is a little low on fluid and I'm getting a groaning noise from the pump. No leaks that I can find. Where should I look and should I take the pump off. Doesn't seem to be leaking into the crackcase. Yesterday I topped off the reservoir with rear end fluid because I didn't have any 241. Will that cause a problem. I figure better any oil than no oil.

If leaking a bit at the stg column, it will take a while to fill up and run over from a tired top seal. But if no leaks visible,,,,its usually going into the crank case and will take a long time to show up on the dipstick. front seal on pump is bad, and usually there is enough wobble on the pump shaft that a new seal will leak also. After market pwr stg pumps can be had pretty cheap off of ebay or amazon. Once you determine that the pump is leaking into the crankcase, I would switch the fluid to motor oil to be more compatible with the engine bearings till you get a new pump or rebuild the old pump. the rebuild kit is/was around $30 and the seals are easy, but getting the round oring to lay in the figure-8 groove is very challenging on reassembly. Then you wait to see how long the new seals last.
