pull starting a tractor

2600 diesel.....I need to have the Cav pump resealed. So, after setting for a period of time, all the diesel leaks out of the pump, and priming and starting is a problem. Here is the question, when pull starting, the wheels want to turn backwards. Tried yesterday evening in every gear and the same results. I've done this before and it does this, but I can usually find a gear that will turn the engine over. What is going on that makes this happen....I'm totally confused! Any ideas are appreciated.

Yes, like I said tried pulling in all gears. Rear tires locked up and turn slightly backwards.....does this in both ranges. Haven't tried to pull in reverse.

You either don't have enough traction (are you doing this in loose gravel or on asphalt?), don't really have it in high gear (is the short shift lever in HIGH range?), or else your engine is locked up (does the engine still turn over with the starter?). And don't try reverse. First, it'll never work (well, maybe in reverse high), and even if it did you'd be turning your engine over backwards. Not really what you want to do.

Not if he pulls the tractor from the rear.

Engine turns over with the starter.....tried all gears in high and low, several times. I am on a gravel road.

Thanks for all the suggestions.....I have tried and always used road gear to pull start any tractor. It would not work on my gravel road. I'll try pulling it to a hard surface and see what happens. Thanks again....

If you have a bunch of loose gravel on your road it'll slid the tires, pull it in the grass or hard dirt.
4th gear in high range otherwise called 8th gear only, pull with another tractor if possible, if with a vehicle like a pickup use first gear in the truck not over 10-15 mph, some try to pull the tractor to fast.
Ease the clutch out instead of poping it for less chance of sliding the tires
