New to me 860, Any particular quirks to these models?

I recently picked up an 860. 5-speed, LPTO, live hyd. wide front, etc. I'm not new to tractors, But I'm new to this model.
Are there any particular things to look for or problematic areas these are know for? I haven't had a chance to go over it in much detail. The biggest issue I've found so far is, on pavement in road gear, the steering will start wobbling. It looks like the steering gear has had some adjusting done on it. Once I get the books for it, I intend to go over it, make adjustments and go from there.

Vintage Ford tractors with worn 5 speed transmissions will jump out of gear with overhauling loads. Third gear is usually the first gear to exhibit this symptom but if worn badly enough, all gears can do so.

Usually, such symptoms only occur with overhauling loads but if things are worn badly enough, jumping out of gear is possible while pulling.

Another thing to check is the front axle pivot pin. These are a wear item, especially if the tractor has or has had a FEL.

The only thing I can think to add is make sure the steering gearbox is full of oil or cornhead greaee from that green company. (almost like oil).

An 860 is a really good tractor, weve had a couple and Ive worked on a few more. Dad has one now. I personally love the 5 speed, so much better than the 4 speed. And Ive only heard of one jumping out of gear, it was 2nd gear that jumped, was easy fix as parts are a available, at least plenty of used parts.
Good luck with your tractor. I think youll really like it.
I wouldnt even worry about it jumping out of gear, like Ive said, Ive only seen one, now be sure to test it down a small grade with a load to make sure you dont have a jumper, if you have good brakes, dont get hurt. But I really dont think its a problem.

I've only driven one or two that would not jump out of third with a heavy overhauling load.

Still, a very good small tractor.

The best tools you can invest in for any machine are The Essential Owner/Operator/Parts/Service Manuals.

860 is a fine machine, well improved over the NAA/600 and especially the N's. Power Steering would be a plus.

I agree. The previous owner threw in the Ford service book and the I & T manual he had. I ordered an owner's manual from right here on YT. Plus I found manuals for my 1600 here that I couldn't find anywhere else. If I'm at an auction, having the manuals will raise what I'll bid on a piece.

I have an 860 for a couple years now. My best old tractor hands down. I have the PS option and it's a breeze to drive.

The steering gear needs fresh oil/grease before you adjust. Don't go overboard on adjusting or you'll be replacing parts soon after. Engine, clutch, trans, PTO are just about bulletproof. Tin on my machine rattles, but I think it's due to my fan blades being unbalanced.

Buy good points or switch to the Pertronix module. Try to use non-Ethanol gas if you can. It'll outwork you unless you are under 50.
