Ford 5000 - 3rd gear popping out

I have Ford 5000 from the 70s(tag is gone so I dont know exact year) with the 8 Speed transmission. 3rd gear will engage but as you drive, it will pop out of place. Currently we use use a bungee cord to hold it. We tried fixing it by replacing the Detent Ball and Spring but it didn't work.

What would be the next step? Replace shaft? I hope not. Thanks, Joe

Pops out while pulling or while holding back going down hill?

It pops out as soon as you start moving no matter what situation, flat ground, hill, implement or no implement

Pull the shift cover back off and take a close look at the shift fork. Use a small mirror if you have to. Inspect closely for signs of any
cracks.

If that looks OK, grab that lower shaft and see if you can move it back and forth. Any significant movement means you have worn thrust
washers and/or bearings on that shaft, which would require pretty much a complete teardown.
