Re: 801 generator

I think you have a good plan, that's what
I'd do. Hopefully you know how to make a
good solid solder connection. According
to the manual the field coil only carries
1.5 - 2 Amps which is modest. The last
time I opened my generator it was for a
seized bearing. They are pretty simple.

Thanks for the reply. Makes me feel better that someone else would do the same. Im going to have my cousin solder it, he is an electrician and also works on computer circuit boards and is good at soldering.
Thanks

ow! Even if it were too short, it would be no big deal to splice another wire onto it for additional length. Some have no honesty!

My guess is the shop just didn't want to
bother with just soldering it for you.
Even if they thought it was short adding
a piece of wire just means two joints to
solder.

You're going to have to get the post hot
and fast. I would suggest removing it,
clean everything good, and tin both
sides good. By doing that you only have
to get the joints hot enough to fuse
together. Once fused let it cool and
then you can carefully add more solder
if you think it's necessary. Use
something for a heat sink on the field
side. I used to have to solder new fuse
holders inside 550v panel boxes at work
and this is the only way I could. Just
trying to solder them together always
overheated the fuse holder and ruined
it.

Ok guys, another update, Im getting kinda frustrated, I hate to admit.
I resorderd the wire to the post and it looked like a good job. I wired it up as In test procedures posted here and it spun.
Next I put it back on the tractor. Double and triple checked the wiring, then polarized the generator at the regulator as the instructions that came with the regulator said to do. The belt was slightly loose since this was replacing something else.
Next I hooked my meter up to the battery posts and started the tractor, for about 510 seconds it showed 13 volts, then dropped to 11.9 or battery voltage. I revved it up and no change in output. I felt the generator with it running and it was cool.
Next I shut the tractor off, and I heard a whirring sound, I looked and the generator was spinning with the loose belt. Tractor was off and not running at this point. And switch off, then generator started smoking again, because the belt finally stopped it from spinning, but the generator is now smoking out the back.
I ran over to disconnect my battery and when I did, I heard the voltage regulator click exactly when I disconnected battery and the smoking stopped after the click and battery was disconnected.
The voltage regulator is new from Steiner and is supposed to be for my generator, from an 801 diesel 12 volt neg ground. I checked the wires many times and they were correct per the diagram I received here, I had to make all the wires up, so I know they were all good.
Im starting to think my regulator is bad or the wrong one, but there isnt an Id plate on my generator to double check to the regulator.
Just now I brought the generator inside the house and hooked my fluke meter to the post and spun the generator with my cordless impact, no battery, just generator and my meter.
I spun it slowly and it showed 15 volts easy and if I spun it faster it went up over 20 volts, I didnt run it like this but about 20 seconds, I didnt know if it would hurt it or not, but it spun right up to show very good charge instantly.
So this now has me thinking the new voltage regulator may be bad or the wrong one, Im leaning towards the wrong one. How do I figure out what regulator goes with this generator since it has no tag on it?
Or am I missing something, Ive put on generators before and never had this kind of trouble.
The rebuild shop I went to, doesnt sell regulators and will not recommend one for your generator. They said they had too much trouble from selling regulators in the past and now will not sell them or even tell you what regulator you need, and that is the only rebuild shop that I know of, I dont even know of one a hundred miles from here.
Maybe I should call a shop that someone on here might recommend and talk to them to see if they could help.
I know the generator came off a 801 diesel, but with the way things get swapped out anymore, I guess it could be from anything.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
