801 generator

I have a 601 work master that is 6 volt, a friend gave me a generator from a 801 diesel that he parted out, it is supposed to be good and Id like to put it on my 601 so itll be 12 volt.
Is this generator negative ground?
Also how do I test it off the tractor to see if it works before I install it? I also would like to know if it works because I dont have a voltage regulator for it yet. Can I still test it?
All the small shops that used to check or rebuild them around here have gone out of business

Yes it is negative ground. You will have to add a resistor in line with your coil as well or switch it to a 12volt coil. I can't answer to the regulator.

01 diesel would have been12v neg ground & it is a "B" type gen & needs "B" type regulator. Your 601 gas used 6v POS gnd and was "A" type gen & reg.
Tie Gen ARM and FIELD together and connect battery + to ARM/Field and batt - to gen case & it should spin as an electric motor. If it does that, it is high likelihood of working as a generator.
Same connections & spin at speed & it should charge batt.
 
Thanks so much for the replies, I just want to make sure Im clear on the test.
The generator is off the tractor, so connect the 2 post , field and arm together then take a 12 volt battery and hook the positive side to the 2 post on the gen that I have tied together.
I guess then run a ground wire from battery to the body of generator. Is this correct, just want to be sure I have it right.

Thanks for the tips, I hooked the generator up as directed and it spun fast, so it should be good. Now I have to get a regulator and a wiring diagram on how its supposed to be hooked up.
Any one have a diagram for this 801 diesel 12 volt generator?

I hooked the generator up as in the diagram except for adding the warning light, because I didnt have one.
Will it still work within the warning light? Or do I need to hook one up? I havent tried to start the tractor yet because I dont have a 12 bolt battery yet.
So will it work without the warning light and not hurt anything ?
Also, would any light work for the warning light if yall recommend one?

o warning light needed. When add one, any small bulb will do.....why not use existing socket with 12v bulb?
 
Thanks JMOR, I think I will add one where you mentioned, the factory location, but I will have to order one from somewhere, maybe this site if they have one.
Just wanted to make sure I wouldnt hurt anything while Im waiting on the socket and bulb. My factory one is missing, and I need to use the tractor.

Quick update on my 12 volt generator conversion. I finally got it installed with a new regulator for that generator. I started it up and it started smoking from the rear of the generator case, so I shut it off disconnected battery and removed generator, I took the back off and discovered the field wire had broken off from its post on the case, and the internal sealing washer fell apart. I took it to the only repair place I could find and they said the wire was now too short and theyd have to replace the field coils. Well the wire looks the perfect length to me, it lays on the post without touching or stretching it at all, I think I let the post turn when I hooked up the wires during install and its my fault. Anyway they wouldnt resorder it to the post , wanted too replace field coils only because wire had broken. They did give me a used insulated washer for free, so it wasnt a wasted trip. Im going to try and re sorder it to the post and see what happens, brushes were fine, they even said so. I took it in to them already apart and that was there diagnosis. They may be right, I dont know, but Im going to repair it and see if it works.
Has anyone else had to sorder the wires to the post? Did it last?
Its a small solid wire, looks fixable to me, but Im no expert on these things, just seemed a waste to replace field coils when the wire was still laying on the post, just broken off.
