zenith carb

my 871 has zenith carb, went through it and want to double check starting settings, idle adjustment 1.5 turns out? main jet adjustment 3-4 out? anything i am missing? thanks dave

Are you sure it's a Zenith Dave?
Most of the Zeniths I've seen in that era for Fords only had one adjustment.
If it's a Marvel Schebler branded with the Zenith markings, then yes,
that should work. Although I'd set the idle at 1/2 turn to start with.

here is what i have on my 871.....
also, just put carb back on(tractor is in UP), it fires and dies, plenty of fuel out the bottom plug, if i choke it won't even fire, what would you look for next? thanks dave

Looks like a Zenith to me.
If you have the air cleaner hose connected, take it off and see if
that helps. If it does, the air cleaner may need to be cleaned.
If not, the needle may not be sealing causing it to flood.

I have a Zenith on my 840 but it's the
model without adjustable main jet. I
developed problems similar to yours, hard
starting and would quit after a short run.
When it quit I could spray starting fluid
into the intake and it would fire. When I
put a different carb on it would run. I
got a rebuild kit for the Zenith and redid
the float section, new needle, don't
remember if I replaced the seat. I
adjusted the float level per instructions
with the kit - it was off before I
adjusted. Reinstalled and it's been
running fine ever since. Of course
standard disclaimers apply, that is what I
describe may not be your problem.

i did check that to make sure carb was getting air by pulling air cleaner hose, you are thinking maybe the needle may not be
seating?
