Ok, I am VERY tempted by a couple of ads I've seen on Facebook
2 months or so ago, I was looking to get a tractor in the 40-60 hp range. I was wanting diesel, slow low gear, reasonable road gear, easy to use.
What I bought was a Ford 841. Dont feel I did badly wirh it, bought it w blade and a 5' brush hog for 1000, and 20 miles from the house. Put a Starter, Points / condenser, distributor rotor and cap- Drove it home, and so far appears everything is operational. Just feels a bit fast in low gear
So looking at Facebook - its still showing Tractors for sale in my area- 1st up- a Ford Selectospeed Diesel w transmission removed. $700- Hmmm
Very next ad- 5 speed Ford transmission, with dual clutch-500
Both are reasonably close to the shop, and I can swap pieces and parts as required

Should I?

That would make a very nice tractor. Other people know more than me but the spline count of the output shafts changed around 57 or 58 and I think the flywheels were different on gas vs diesel engines. Do some research to make sure the parts will fit before jumping.

The problem with the 841 is the same problem the 8N had the gearing is a bit on the high side. I have an 841S. The S stands for the fact it has a factory installed Sherman combo aux transmission but the problem with that is the PTO also slows down or speed up when your in under drive or overdrive

I'm with Old on this one, You might be better off if you could find a Sherman three way,
Standard, over and under drive !! Jim in N.M.

Did forget to mention one small factor for me to look into this- In my job, I typically have to drain all my fuel sumps to the tune of a gallon and half a day. And (I know its hard to imagine) Its hard to get rid of 40-50 gallons of Jet A a month. I do use a couple of gallons in the 841 tanks (Runs just fine at that ratio) but sure would be nice to run it straght in the diesel.......and its free to boot!
