Ford 550 no clutch or brakes

Hello everyone, help or pointers needed. My old tractor has been sitting a while I went to fire it up and the clutch pedal and brake pedal go
straight to the floor. (Surprised it started first time!)
clutch down and you can feel it on the gear lever its not right. I did force it into reverse the tractor started going backwards managed to
get it out and the brakes done absolutely nothing.

If the disc is stuck to the flywheel you might be able to drive it around and have it free up, or if you have another tractor, pull it around in gear with the clutch down and fuel/ignition off. Just make sure the engine is rotating in the correct direction in whatever gear you select. The brakes baffle me a little. They are mechanically operated as and wouldnt just go to the floor from sitting... this had to be an existing condition. Look for damaged linkage, lost pins (both sides gone?) or maybe they really are that far out of adjustment. If they are on the floor and you have zero brakes I have a bad feeling the paper fell off the brake disks, youre not going to be able to adjust them back. (If in fact they are bonded paper. 4500 had brass and 655 had paper, never saw 550 brakes) you might get faint brakes, but now theyre running metal-to-metal and making steel chips to circulate in the trans. To service these brakes youll have to remove the backhoe attachment and separate the rear end housing from the transmission and roll it out, because the axle housings will not clear the backhoe frame.
 
Regarding the clutch, does it come back up when you take your foot off? Is everything moving where it goes into the bell housing?
 
Hi Fritz, the clutch pedal springs back like it always has thats why i'm a little puzzled. it has sat for some time so theres every chance that plate will need freed off. it all looks normal from the outside

don't get me wrong the brakes haven't been great when i was using it last year but they would stop the machine although it was at the bottom of the pedal travel.

But that was when the clutch was disengaging properly, correct? You weren't stopping it with the brake pedal without pushing in the clutch were you? If the clutch is stuck and the trans is in gear and the engine is running then the engine/clutch/trans will overpower the brakes, especially if the brakes were weak to begin with. I'm guessing that if you get the clutch straightened out then the brakes may still work a little like they did before.
 
Hi Sean, I see where you're coming from. Its sounds like I need to free off the clutch as that is a new problem.
I just need to make sure I can stop the beast when in gear from going through the garden fence.

If the pedal feels like it always did then I would say the throw out bearing hub is not stuck on the sleeve. If the fingers are operating then the plate is stuck to the flywheel or pressure plate. Run it into a pile of dirt with the clutch pedal down and see if it will come loose. If this doesnt work after several tries, then you will have to split the tractor.
