Wrong fuel cap 4600

52Flat

I bought a 1978-79 4600 a few years ago and the diesel would slosh out when the tank was anywhere near full. It was pretty clear it had the wrong cap, so I got a new one. When I tried to put it on it wound not fit as the filler neck is not centered in the hood and may be too low. Tank is bolted to all connections and the tank looks correct. Anybody have any idea what the problem would be?

I've got a 4500 that's similar - I think (know) the sheet metal has been hit hard enough to deform the metal and/or the mounting points.

Mine's not so bad I can't put up with it since the tractor sees relatively few hours a year. One of its smaller problems actually, and not even on the list to fix.

Only good solution is probably to remove the sheet metal and maybe the tank, analyze the situation and make adjustments during reassembly - that would be a big fussy job.

You might see if you can create some custom blocking on the sheet metal and a jacking point and 'push' the sheet metal forward enough for the cap to fit. Not elegant and might not work.

Or deform or remove some metal around the filler neck and not worry about the next owner cursing you.

Maybe someone else will have a suggestion.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. My sheet metal looks perfect. Actually just had it all off fixing the steering column leak. I can push the cowl so that the filler neck
centers in the hood hole with the bolts out, but then its out of line with the supports. The supports dont look like they move too easy. Looked like they were
welded to a plate thats bolted to the block.

Either the dash shroud is out of adjustment or it's got the wrong fuel tank, the filler neck should be sticking up 1" to 1 1/2" above the shroud.

4000/4600 have 15 gallon tanks
3000/3600 have 13 gallon tanks that bolt up at the same points but are shorter to match the lower hood profile

The battery box support sets the height on the right side but the support rod for the left side can get bent raising or lowering that side of the shroud
Also the left side of the shroud has 2 holes near the bottom, the upper hole is were the shroud bolts to the support rod, the lower hole is for the hood bolt

I adjusted the left support until the filler neck was centered and raised through the hood. But then the hood wouldnt line up. Ended up getting it all back together
with the new cap, but its tight. BTW, the filler neck is only about 1 3/8 inches high from where it comes from the tank .

(quoted from post at 12:36:53 05/11/21) Make sure that new cap is vented.
I got a new TISCO cap and it was not vented. Sucked my tank in and it now leaks.
I ordered a new tank yesterday. Really sucks! LOL!

It is vented but it doesnt have the plastic extension like the $30 ones. It came from a&i products. Havent used the tractor with it on there yet.

Mine SAID it was vented. It was not. Even tried a second one at the dealer, Same thing. I couldn't blow thru it. Maybe they got it fixed or My dealer got a bad batch.
I bought the 30 some dollar one with the plastic extension.
I would test it by running for a little while and making sure that it is not drawing a vacuum.
