3cyl 2000 needs overhaul

A friend has a 2000 Ford for sale for $2000 but it needs an overhaul. Is that a good price? How much does an overhaul cost if I put it together but get someone to do the machining?

Is this a BSD type engine 2.6 liter? Does it run now?

You should be able to do an in frame overhaul if nothing is damaged.

Here is my 2 opinion. If it is an 8spd, has power steering, differential lock, live pto, decent tires and rims and good sheet metal I would give $2000 for it running and in need of an overhaul. If it is a cobbled up mess then I probably would not.

I wouldn't even consider it, if it is a gas. Distributor problems, a fuel pump that wasn't needed, holley carburetor problems.governor linkage problems. Come to think of it I hate working on a 3 cyl gas.

Think I will pass on this one. I have a old two cylinder gas John Deere that I have to work on every time I use it. I probably need to find a good used tractor thats not having issues. Thanks for everyones input.

Those are good small tractors. Very reliable, easy to work on, excellent parts availability.
To weigh in on his asking price we would want to know what options it has. Which transmission, live PTO or no, power steering or no. Also how good are the tires?
Am picking these numbers out of thin air so don't go to the bank with them.
Bore block $350
New oversized pistons $350
Valve job $200
New bearings including cam bearings $200
Gasket set $100
Grind crank if needed $150
Miscellaneous $100
That is about $1500 if you do the work.
Add to that a clutch?
If the tractor was otherwise nice with the options mentioned above, good tires, etc it would be worth rebuilding. If it is a beleagured old thing with no options and poor tires I would walk away - or, offer him a grand for it.
You could also do an inframe on it depending on how much wear in the bores- valves, rings, gaskets and rod bearings for probably $500 or so. Get a couple thousand more hours out of it before it needs a full reman.
Lastly,
Don't let anyone tell you those gassers are no good. Half a million farmers have done a few billion hours of useful work with them.
