Hi Guys...new to the forum.

I have just purchased a Ford 4600 (not an SU)... I have scoured everywhere for a serial number which I believed had to start with a "C". Many searches on the net say the serial number is located on the top right of the transmission. And yup...sure as eggs there is a number there. But it is "B292017" and immediately above that number is another number "6K20"

Can anyone shed any light on this..??
 
A "C" serial number means it was built in
the U.S.
An "A" serial number means it was built
in Antwerp, Belgium.
Your "B" serial number means your tractor
rolled off the assembly line in Basildon,
England.
The 6K20 looks like part of a unit
number, but it should have another
letter (A, B, or C) at the end. It's a
date code... 1976, October 20... and the
A,B, or C would indicate 1st, 2nd, or
3rd shift.
 
What Ford farmer said.... plus, there should be a third number up above the date code which is the model number that would tell you what engine, transmission and PTO options it had when it left the factory. That third number may be up in the rougher part of the casting and may be harder to find and read.

Also, some of the early European models didn't have that last letter in the date code indicating what shift was on at the time. I don't know if it was because they only ran one shift for the first couple of years at those plants or if they just weren't being consistent with the stamping of the numbers.
 
Also look on the under side of the right side hood panel. There should have origninally been a foil sticker there with all of those numbers plus some others. A 4600 model number from late 1976 could have started with DA1 or DA2 as they changed fro the 1 to the 2 somewhere near that time period.

When Ford changed them to paper air filter around June of 76 they changed the 1 to a 2
So a 4600 built from 75 to June 76 would be a DA1, his being a OCT 76 tractor should be a DA2 model

I recently learned this info from a Ford tractor group in the UK and Ireland.

Destroked - thanks for that information. I knew they changed form a 1 to a 2 sometime in late '66. I didn't know why or exactly when until now. People send me numbers from their tractors a lot because of that reference document I put together and I had been reviewing them trying to narrow down the date that they switched. The earliest I had seen with a 2 so far was a late October of 1967 tractor and the latest one I had seen with a 1 was from early June of the same year, so I knew it had to be somewhere in between those dates.
 
Wow....Thanks to all you guys...Plenty of info for me to work with here...fantastic knowledge. And Sean in PA I'll search for that 3rd number this arvo. I found that sticker inside the bonnet/hood but very dirty and unreadable...I'll attack it with some alcohol as well to see if I can manage to improve it to a "readable" stage. Again...many thanks guys..!!

The numbers on the foil sticker are stamped into the foil, so try putting a piece of paper over the sticker and rubbing the paper with the side of a dull pencil tip.
