New to me 4000

I picked up a 74 4000 diesel tonight. First diesel Ive owned. Once I got accustomed to no governer it ran pretty good. I do have a couple questions.

1. What battery does it need. The one it came with is weak.

2. It smokes a little out the front of the engine by the cooling fan. What would be causing that?

Otherwise its a pretty solid old tractor. Really happy with it so far. Love that power steering.

Not sure what you mean by no governor.
That engine has an internal governor in the
the injector pump.
The smoke is coming from a tube that
connects to the top/front of the valve
cover - by the cap where you add engine oil
- and drops down in front of the engine.
It's called the crank case ventilation
tube.
Whether gas or diesel, smoke from that tube
means you have blow-by. Blow-by generally
indicates worn piston rings.

The correct battery for those is a 4DLT.
Big, honkin thing that completely fills the
battery tray. Some guys have good luck with
them. I have not and they are expensive and
don't have a great warranty. So I just use
a low profile car or truck battery that
will fit under the hood.
Before I dropped a bundle on a battery I
would check the connections on Both ends of
the battery cables. Cables should be big
fat ones. Not the whimpy, skinny ones like
you find on the wife's Camry or Impala.
4000 IS a great tractor.

Thank you for the reply. I couldnt see the tube but that would explain it. I will probably go through the engine this winter then. Ive had a few Fords but really like this one. Dont think I did too bad on it. We made a deal at 4K and then I drove it 30 miles back to the new place. Was a great ride home.

Unless it starts hard, I wouldn't be in a
hurry to open up the engine. There is
almost always some blow by on them.

Over here in uk the 4000 was a very good tractor in
it's day. Changing engine oil may help with
breathing also check if radiator is clear
