installing grease zerk for rear axel bearing

Is there a way to grease the axel bearings in a ford 2000 tractor by installing a grease zerk so I don't have to tear the tractor apart to manually grease the bearings. Would anybody know where to drill and tap a grease zerk and if this is even possible. Thank you for your help.

I don't think that is recommended. The bearings sit between the internal oil seal that keeps the gear oil inside and the outer dust seal that keeps dust from getting into the bearings. If you keep pumping grease in there repeatedly it will need somewhere to go and will compromise one of the seals. I am also reasonably sure that you're not supposed to have to keep adding grease on a regular basis. The Operator's Manual for the 3 cylinder thousand series mentions greasing the front wheel bearings as a regular maintenance item (every 600 hours), but not the rears. I assume the Operators Manual for the 4 cylinder 2000 is the same. The Service manual is the only place that mentions greasing the rear bearings, and I take that to mean that they should only be greased whenever you have the rear axle apart for some other issue.

By the way, it's usually best to specify whether your 2000 is a 3 cylinder or 4 cylinder tractor, and when talking about the rear axle, if it is a 4 cylinder, whether it has the round or square profile axle trumpets.

I assumed that you meant the rear axle bearings in my last reply as the front ones already have a grease zerk from the factory, at least on the 3 cylinder 2000 and the front bearings are pretty easily accessible to repack on a 4 cylinder 2000, similar to a 1950's or 1960's era car.

I have been tapping and installing grease zerks on the ford rear axle for many years, JD & IH did it so why not Ford don't think it could
hurt a bearing to grease it (THIS WILL STIR THINGS UP wink wink)
