Hi, I'm New. What's This Lever Do?

Hello all. I got a 1955 Ford 860 a few days ago. It's up and running, and it doesn't need anything immediately besides some lighting fixed. I do have a question about hydraulics, though. There's a lever on the right side near the main control that must serve some function, but I don't know what that function is. Anyone happen to know? I tried putting in a picture, but I don't know what I'm doing and it kept being auto-rejected for some reason.

That is the draft/position lever. In one position it is constant draft mode and the other the hydraulics work by position.

You need to post several times to be able to post a picture.

Pages from Owner's Manual.

Hope that helps!

Yes, it is indeed the draft control lever. I am planning on getting a shop manual sometime soon so I can stop asking these sorts of questions. The only other thing I can't figure out is why the battery is wired as a negative ground. It's still a 6v system, so it doesn't look like it was converted in any way. The tractor starts and runs. Can I assume if the battery were installed backwards, the tractor would not start?

Thank you. I fully intend, in the future, to know the inns and outs of both of those settings. Someone else posted a picture of the manual, and I get the broad strokes, just not the finer details. Mostly we'll just be using the hydraulics for hay, so I might never even need the self-levelling draft.

Incorrect assumption. Starter does not care. It does not have permanent magnets.
I would not change things IF it works as is.
The magnetic field's direction in the generator determines which pole is ground. That is why you polarize the Generator. To set its permanent magnetic field correctly.

Getting an Owner's (aka Operator's) Manual first, as soon as possible, will likely be most useful for you at this point. It will have info on controls, adjustments, lubrication, etc. that owners/operators would normally need to operate and maintain their tractor. Often that type info is not in shop/service manuals, which is more aimed to mechanics diagnosing issues and repairing the tractors.

Thank you. I installed the new battery with the same negative ground, and everything seems to be working appropriately.

Leave it up all the time, position control, when you dont know what it is.

The draft position allows the tractor to adjust the 3pt itself depend on the amount of pull is on the tractor, such as plowing, so it can raise or lower the plow to keep driving the same speed. It might give unpredictable results on lighter loads, and often the linkages are pretty worn on an old tractor so best not to fool with the draft, or down, position until you understand it.
