Working on neighbor's 2000 diesel I noticed oil seeping from around this stud that is behind the cover on the transmission where check hydraulic pressure.
It appears to to have 2 washers underneath the nut.
Before I mess with it, I thought I'd ask what its purpose is and does is have n "0" ring under the bottom washer.

That's actually on the hydraulic top cover, which is on top of the rear axle center housing, not the transmission. That should be a bolt, not a stud with a washer and a nut. It holds something inside up against the top cover, possibly the lift cylinder housing, but I'm not 100% sure. The parts drawing does not show any o-ring used with the bolt. The part number for the correct bolt is 43077S36.

Thanks, that makes sense.
I'd like to stop the slight the oil from seeping out it isn't bad, but I'd still like to stop it, but I'd be afraid to look into it, but if it holds something underneath I'd be real leery about taking the jamb nut off.
