Ford 5000 tractor

I have a Ford 5000 tractor that I just bought. The pto seems to be engaged and spins all the time. The pto lever does not seem to change the
speed. I am trying to run a 6 ft bush hog. The pto seems to not be turning fast enpugh. It also broke a shear pin on the cutter pto shaft.
Any help would be appreciated.

The PTO is engaged with the lever at the heel of your left foot as you sit in the seat moved toward the rear of the tractor. I have one and it does the same thing. If I have to try to start multiple times in cold weather the PTO will spin. When connecting a PTO shaft have the tractor shut down for safety. There is a PTO brake in the back end which I have never bothered to replace, by all reports by others on here it is small and flimsy so prone to failure. It is up to you what you do, this can be lived with or repaired. Getting into the back end to replace things is beyond my mechanical ability. All the best with it the 5000 is a great tractor look after it and it will serve you well. Mine is on light duties, it is a year older than me I am 50 and it still earns its keep.

There is a brake to stop the shaft from turning when shut off. They wear out. There is no speed adjustment except the throttle unless it has the two speed PTO which most do not. A slow turning implement would most likely mean that the clutch pack is slipping, possibly because of low hydraulic pressure.

Your PTO clutch pack needs to be rebuilt and the brake band around needs replacing. You will need to purchase a service manual to do this work.

If your broke the shear pin, I wonder if your pto is working or not.

The pto brake problem is common and not worth fixing, as long as you realize that the tractor must be OFF when working around the pto.

with the pto engaged start out in heavy grass and slowly rev up the throttle... if the cutter speeds up, its probably working. if it slows down when in heavy grass, your pto is slipping due to several things, one being the pump, the other being the pto clutch.

the pto should be turned on at or near idle speed so you dont break the shear pin,, and then you throttle up to 1900 rpms for correct pto speed. You then pick a gear for the correct ground speed but the rpms must stay at 1900 for correct operation of the cutter at 540 rpms at the pto shaft.

The pto will spin when turn off if.... the pto brake paw is worn and not adjusted, AND... especially when the fluid is cold and drags across the clutch plates,, less so when the fluid is warmed up and thins down. OR... the clutch plates are warped and thus rubbing each other.

The pto will slip when... the clutch plates are worn out, the orings are bad, the pump the activates the clutch is worn out, or the hydraulic line or valve that turns on the pto clutch is broken or bad.

Breaking the shear pin indicates that it is delivering plenty of power, so why would that make you think that the PTO's not working?

He didn't say what actually happened when the shear pin broke. If the mower hit something that stopped the blades then breaking the shear pin is expected and is also a sign that the PTO clutch isn't slipping very much, if at all.

As the others say,

Typically when off if the pto brake is wore out the pto spins from friction of the oil and gears. But it has very little real power, just spins freewheeling.

When you put the pto on, it will lock in the pto. If this part is wore out, then it will be very slow to grab and lock in the pto. It will slowly spin up to speed and then lock in. If extremely worn it might not really lock up, tho that’s something to get that bad.

It sounds like you have both conditions, they are common.

How did the shear pin break, did you hit something? After the pto was engaged for a minute, so it was more so fully locked in?

MANGOZTA,

You should start a new post for your problem. When you do, I suggest leaving out the link to another site about your manual. In Classic it shows up as external link and in Modern you post doesn't show at all because of that link. The YT Store, that provides this site for people to use for free, sells parts and manuals and filters block most references to those they consider competitors.

For the record in case someone wonders about a couple posts missing here. My reply to MANGOZTA only shows in Classic, as his post does, due to a link to a vendor he put in his post. His problem is with a 5550 and unrelated to the PTO, so I suggested he start his own post without the vendor name or link.
